STORRS, Conn. – UConn head rowing coach Jennifer Sanford has announced another addition to her coaching staff, as former Husky Tyler Olander joins the program as a volunteer assistant coach.
"I met Tyler at the Jim Calhoun Celebrity Classic Charity All-Star event in August 2018," said Sanford. "From there, we stayed in touch and have had countless conversations about how to encourage student-athletes to perform at the highest level in all areas of their collegiate experience. Tyler has great insight as a former two-time collegiate basketball National Champion, former professional basketball player, and former professional baseball player. I am confident that Tyler's involvement will be positive and uplifting for our team."
"I am extremely excited to be getting back involved with UConn Athletics after having such an amazing experience in my four years there," said Olander. So many members of the UConn community have played such a positive role in shaping every area of my life, and many still do today. I am grateful for the opportunity to use my experiences as a former collegiate and professional athlete to help the student-athletes realize and reach their full potentials in life."
Olander graduated from UConn in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. As a student-athlete, he was a member of the UConn men's basketball team from 2011-14 where he was a two-year captain (2013, '14) and two-time national champion (2011, '14). Additionally, Olander was named UConn Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2012 and won back-to-back Strength and Conditioning awards in 2013 and 2014.
Olander had three seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and played professional basketball in the Lithuanian Krepsino and LEB Silver Leagues. In additional to working with the Women's Rowing team, Olander is currently in the Management Program at Enterprise.
