TAMPA, Fla. – The UConn men's soccer team battled hard for 90 minutes and created some quality scoring chances, but ultimately came up short as the Huskies fell to USF 1-0 in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. The Huskies close the door on the 2019 season, ending the year with a 5-12-1 mark.
It was all defense through the first 45 minutes of play. The Huskies held a 4-2 shot advantage over the Bulls, but shots on goal remained even at zero as neither team was able to get off a quality attempt during the half.
The home team broke through on the scoreboard in the 51', when Adrian Billhardt slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the net off assists from Victor Claudel and Henrique Gallina.
UConn nearly responded in the 56' – Dayonn Harris found some open space in the UConn attacking third and tried to go bottom center, but his shot sailed just wide left.
The Huskies kept the pressure on in the second half as they continued to search for the equalizer. UConn outshot the Bulls 7-3 in the final frame and was able to create a couple more quality scoring chances in the last 10 minutes in an attempt to send the game into overtime.
Harris' tried to sneak one past Devenish-Meares at 80:59, but the USF keeper hopped on the ball to prevent the score. Moments later, Ben Awashie jumped on a loose ball and tried to slip his shot bottom center, but the tying goal was thwarted as Devenish-Meares snagged the ball on the hop to keep USF in front, 1-0.
