Second Half Starts at Ledyard Classic this Weekend

- The UConn Huskies get the season restarted this weekend at the 31st Ledyard Classic tournament at Dartmouth College. The Huskies will face St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon, live on NESN, and face the host Big Green on Sunday night to close out the event.
- UConn ended the first half of the season playing their best hockey, winners of four-straight and 5-1-2 over their last eight games before the break. The Huskies swept a Hockey East series with Vermont at home last time out to enter the break at 4-4-2 in the league and tied for sixth.
- The Huskies finished the first semester with their most wins in the first half since going 8-11-2 in 2017-18 into the break. The Huskies also have their first winning record in the first half since head coach Mike Cavanaugh's first season (2013-14 / 6-5-2).
- This weekend's tournament is the first to two in-season tournaments on the UConn schedule this year. The Huskies will play in the inaugural Connecticut Ice Festival at the end of January with state rivals Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Yale. UConn won a tournament trophy under head coach Mike Cavanaugh when they defeated St. Cloud State and Brown to claim the 2016 Desert Hockey Classic at Arizona State.
- Sophomore Jachym Kondelik carries a season long five-game point streak (2g/5a) into this weekend's game, one game off his career-high. Kondelik leads the team in scoring with 13 points and has eclipsed his goal total from his freshman season (4g) with six on the season.
- Senior Benjamin Freeman is riding a team-best six-game point streak, matching his career-long. During this run, he has three goals and five assists and is now second on the team in scoring (3-9-12). Freeman is UConn's active career point leader, with 61 points on 21 goals and 40 assists. in 118 career games.
- Sophomore Jonny Evans missed six games with injury before returning for the series with Vermont before the break. Evans helped lead the Huskies to a 7-4 win and sweep of the Catmounts with his first career hat-trick. It was the first UConn hat-trick since senior Alexander Payusov netted three in a win at AIC in October of 2017.
- Sophomore goaltender Tomas Vomacka has started every game on the season and has matched his win total from his rookie season at seven victories. Vomacaka was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team last year.
- UConn freshmen Vladislav Firstov leads the Husky rookies in scoring with 10 points (5g/5a) while fellow frosh defenseman Yan Kuznetsov leads all UConn blue-liners with 9 points (2g/7a).
Last Meeting vs. St. Lawrence
January 5, 2019 - W, 6-3 - at Ice Vegas Invite
Six different Huskies found the back of the net as UConn took down St. Lawrence 6-3 in the third place game of the Ice Vegas Invitational at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last January. The Huskies built a 4-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the first period and never looked back, putting a season-high six goals on the board. Freshman Marc Gatcomb scored his first collegiate goal in the win while senior Karl El-Mir had two assists and freshman Kale Howarth had a goal and an assist. Howarth was named to the Ice Vegas Invitational all-tournament team. Senior Max Kalter opened the scoring in the win and was followed by Howarth, Gatcomb and freshman Jachym Kondelik in the first period. The Huskies tacked on two more in the second period, coming off the sticks of juniors Benjamin Freeman and Alexander Payusov. The Huskies put a season-high 44 shots on goal in the win. Junior goaltender Adam Huska made 22 saves to earn his fifth win on the season.
Last Meeting vs. Dartmouth
November 2, 2018 - W, 1-0 - at Thompson Arena
UConn went on the road for an early January non-conference match-up at Dartmouth, falling to the Big Green, 5-1. Freshman Jordan Sims scored UConn's lone goal while sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus made 36 stops in the losing effort. Dartmouth's Matt Reber had a goal and an assist in the win. Goaltender James Mello needed to make just 17 saves to earn the win. The Big Green outshot the Huskies 41-18 on the night and scored once in four power play chances. UConn finally got on the board with an unassisted goal from Sims late in the third period.Â
UConn vs. the ECAC
- UConn is 24-58-10 all-time against teams from the ECAC. Under head coach Mike Cavanaugh, the Huskies are 11-10-3 against the ECAC.
- In 2018-19, the Huskies were 4-3-0 against teams from the ECAC, beating St. Lawrence (6-3), Yale (3-1), RPI (2-1) and Brown (3-1) while falling to Quinnipiac (4-2), the Bulldogs (6-3) in the Friendship Four, and the Engineers (5-2).
- UConn is scheduled to face off against teams from the ECAC five times this season. The Huskies have already split with RPI, losing at home, 5-3, and winning on the road, 5-2. The Huskies will face St. Lawrence and Dartmouth in the Ledyard Classic, and Quinnipiac in the Connecticut Ice Festival. The Huskies could potentially be matched-up with Yale in the second game of the CT Ice event.
- The Huskies have faced Brown (5-5-1), Colgate (3-5-0), Dartmouth (0-2-0), Princeton (0-3-0), Quinnipiac (11-19-2), Rensselaer (2-4-3), St. Lawrence (1-0-0), Union (1-7-4) and Yale (0-13-0) from the league.
Last Time Out...
- The Huskies earned their second-straight weekend sweep, taking down Vermont, 3-2 and 7-4, in a pair of Hockey East games at the XL Center.Â
- In Friday's win, sophomore Jachym Kondelik scored the game-winning goal in the third period to lift the Huskies to a 3-2 win over the Catamouth
- UConn's Kondelik broke a 2-2 tie at 11:32 in the third period with his team-leading sixth goal and his second game-winner this year while giving him four-straight games with a point.
- The Huskies matched their season-high with eight penalties, six coming in the first period. The UConn penalty kill finished 1-for-7 on the night.
- UConn got their fourth-straight win on Saturday as sophomore Jonny Evans recorded his first career hat-trick to power the Huskies to a 7-4 victory.
- Evans had the game-winner and finished the first Husky hat-trick since 2017 with a late empty netter.
- Sophomore Marc Gatcomb scored his fourth goal of the season and picked-up an assist. Kondelik dished a pair of assists to extend his point streak to a season-best five games while senior Benjamin Freeman also extended his point streak with an assist, matching his career-best at six games.
