MANCHESTER, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team played their first home match of the spring season on Friday night at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester and came up just short in a battle with the Drexel Dragons, falling 4-3.
The two teams split the first two doubles matches leaving it up to the No. 2 match-up to decide the opening point. UConn's No. 1 team of senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and freshman Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) posted a 6-4 win over Ghita Benhadi and C. Corte Gonzalez, 6-4. Drexel got the point as their No. 2 team of Salma Ziouti and Tara Veluvolu won 6-4 over freshman Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) and junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia).
In singles action the Huskies put together a late charge with the match coming down to the No. 5 singles result to decide it. The Huskies pulled even right away as sophomore Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, Fla.) posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Gonzalez.
Drexel took back control with consecutive wins at No. 1 and No. 2 but the Huskies again answered, posting wins at No. 3 and No. 4. Chung pulled UConn to down 3-2 thanks to a 7-5 and 6-2 win over Katarina Majorova at No. 3. Perrotta won her No. 4 match-up with Veluvolu in a three-set battle. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, she stormed back to force a third set with a 7-5 win and then clinched it at 7-6 (5) to leave the match tied at 3-3.
The No. 5 match between sophomore Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and Marta Martinez would also go to all three sets. Rabines took the opening set 6-3 but came up short of clinching, falling 6-4 and 6-3 to Martinez.
The Huskies return to action next weekend with a pair of matches at Michigan State where they will face the host Spartans and Detroit Mercy.
