Softball Sweeps Opening Day DH

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team accomplished quite a feat on Opening Day by sweeping a doubleheader against Bryant and Michigan State at the FIU Softball Stadium.
The Huskies start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2013 and did it in two completely different fashions. In the season opener against the Bulldogs, the Huskies run-ruled Bryant, 11-0, in five innings.
UConn then grinded out a tight 3-2 win against Michigan State with a quality effort in the circle from Jill Stockley and a clutch seventh inning knock from Carli Cutler.
Game 1
The Huskies started the scoring early by scoring four runs in the first at-bat of the season. Cutler singled home Briana Marcelino for the only hit of the inning to make it 1-0. UConn earned four walks in the inning including two with the bases loaded.
That was all that Katie Koshes needed in the circle, as the Orange, Conn. native tossed five shutout innings, scattered five hits and struck out eight.
The Huskies gave Koshes plenty of cushion by posting crooked number innings in the third (3) and fifth (4).
Kiwi McDaniel and Cutler each provided a pair of RBIs while Marcelino joined the duo with two hits in the contest.
Game 2
In game two, the Huskies received a quality pitching performance from Jill Stockley. The Longmeadow, Mass. native allowed just three hits and struck out four in her first win of 2019.
Cutler provided the clutch, two-out RBI single in the seventh to score Kelli Bates after she reached on an error. Cutler totaled two RBIs in the game to push her total to four in the doubleheader.
The knock was big for the Huskies after Michigan State had just tied the game in the previous half inning on a two-run homer.
McDaniel, Cutler and Samantha Barnett all recorded multi-hit efforts in the victory.
Next up, the Huskies play two more games on Saturday against Bryant at 10:00 a.m. and the host FIU at 7:15 p.m.
