BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn men's track & field team put another solid weekend on their ledger this indoor season, turning in plenty of personal best performances at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.
"We had a really good meet today," stated head coach Greg Roy. "We rested some guys and had some guys on off events, but we got a lot done today."
"We really competed well today, especially our young guys," commented Roy. "They are really showing us they can compete. Two great weeks in a row and really, we are in the midst of putting together a really nice season."
Sophomore Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) had a great meet, winning the shot put with a throw of 16.68 meters (54'8.75"), just shy of his personal best of 16.85 meters (55'3.5"). Stueber picked up some key wins including beating a pair of Northeastern throwers (Spencer McKeough/Andrew Canistracci) who finished ahead of him at last weekend's New England Championship.
In the pole vault, senior Ian Bergere (Madison, Conn.) continued his strong start to the indoor season, finishing second with a height of 4.95 meters (16'2.75"). Bergere finished tied with former Husky and school record holder Craig Hunter, a three-time All-American.
In the triple jump, senior Malik Snead (Trenton, N.J.) was fourth with a leap of 15.39 meters (50'6.00"). "Malik had a very strong technical day and really looks like he is rounding into form heading into championships."
On the track, freshman Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) led a large Husky contingent in the 400 meters, clocking a big personal best. "Wellington had a huge PR today and really did a great job," said Roy. "He took his head and was third overall, leading all five Huskies in the event who had a PR." Ventura clocked in at 47.37 seconds, just shy of a full second off his personal best on the season.Â
Senior Kyle Barber (Fayetteville, N.Y.) continued to improve his time in the mile, cutting his personal best down to 4:06.48 on Saturday. Barber came into the weekend ranked third in the American Athletic Conference in the mile.
In the 500 meters, senior Kyle Trocki (Shrewsbury, Mass.) won his heat and was fifth overall with a personal best time of 1:04.61. Sophomore Brian Camillieri (Pearl River, N.Y.) ran the event for the first time, clocking in at 1:05.25. Fresman Noah Woodman (Hampstead, N.H.) ran the 200 meters for the first time this season and posted a time of 21.79 seconds
In the 60 meter hurdles, freshman Xavier Smith recorded a personal best with a time of 8.14 seconds.
The Huskies will have one final tune-up next weekend at Rhode Island as they gear up for the AAC Championships in two weeks.
