Huskies Lose Tough Battle with Stony Brook

MANCHESTER, Conn. – The UConn Huskies grabbed the opening doubles point but came up short in singles play, falling to Stony Brook, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester, Conn.
The Huskies came out fast with convincing wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The tandem of senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and freshman Julieanne Bou (X) opened with a 6-2 win over Jamie Wei and Nolwenn Cardoso at No. 1, their team-leading 14th win together this season. The duo is now 5-2 together in dual match play.
The point was clinched at the No. 3 spot with junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) and freshman Mireille Moreau (X) posted a 6-3 win over A. Carrion Rodriugez and Elizabeth Pam.
The match came down to the final singles match contested at No. 1. UConn grabbed the first win with Bou winning her match with Maria Pinto Ribeiro at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-0, her 12th singles victory of the year. The Seawolves rang off wins at No. 6, 2 and 4 to take a 3-2 lead in the match.
Perrotta evened things up at No. 5 with a three-set win over Rodriguez. After dropping the first set 6-4, she stormed back to win 6-4 and 6-4 to post her 10th win of the season. The deciding match also went to three sets at No. 1 where senior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) lost to Wei, 5-7, 6-3 and 6-2.
The Huskies are next in action on Saturday, March 9 when they play host to AAC foe Temple at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club.
