MANCHESTER, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team snapped a three-match skid and notched their first win over an American Athletic Conference opponent on Saturday with a 4-3 win over the Temple Owls at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club.
"This was a great win over a very tough conference opponent," commented head coach Glenn Marshall. "The team has had several close matches this spring, and we really hung tough today."
"We set the tone with some very good doubles play and all three teams were playing well," commented Marshall. "It is nice to see their work together as teammates continue to grow on the court."
The Huskies got off to a fast start with matching 6-2 wins in doubles play by their top-two teams. At No. 1, senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and freshman Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) grabbed the first win by taking down Ruoyu Chen and Chunan Xiang. The duo are now 6-2 in dual matches at No.1 and improve to 5-8 overall as a team this season. The opening point was clinched at No. 2 with senior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) taking down Kristina Titova and Oleksandra Doroshenko.
"On the singles side, we came out with some great momentum and won the first sets on the first 4 courts," said the head coach. "Julieanne Bou had a double win today in singles and doubles, and also clinched the fourth point to win the match."
Junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) won at No. 4 over Xiang, 6-0 and 6-3 for her 10th victory of the season. Freshman Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) won her No. 3 singles over Titova, 6-3, 7-6 (7) and the Huskies clinched it at No. 2 with Bou taking down Stefaniya Surikova in a three-set battle. Bou won 6-1, 3-6 and 7-6 (4) to notch her 13th win of the season.
"It was a great day for the team, and a very solid conference win. I'm proud of how they competed today, as it was some of our best tennis of the spring season."
The Huskies will head south for their next two matches, facing North Florida on March 17 and Georgia Southern on March 19.
