STATESBORO, Ga. – The UConn Huskies wrapped up their spring break trip in a big way on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off Georgia Southern, 4-3. The marathon match saw the Huskies swept all three doubles matches and clinched the win at No. 1 singles spot to earn their fourth dual match win on the year.
"This was a great win for our team today," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "Georgia Southern is a very tough squad, and it took everything we had to defeat them in a four hour match today."
"We started off with some solid doubles from all three teams," stated Marshall "Each of them had some ups and downs, but all hung tough down the stretch to pull out the victory."
The No. 3 team of junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) and freshman Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) got things started with a 6-4 win over Paula Boixader and Charlotte Van Dieme, their third-straight win together to improve to 4-2 at the No. 3 spot this season.
UConn clinched the opening point at No. 2 with senior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) stopping Lindsay Truscott and Luisa Hrda, 7-6. UConn made it a clean sweep with a win at No. 1 with senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and freshman Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) beating Arianne De Winter and Emilia Bujan, 7-6. The duo improved to 16-9 together this season.
"The singles proved to be extremely close in every position," said Marshall. "Each team had momentum at different times, but we dug deep in a few spots that proved to be the difference. I think the experience of our recent close matches gave us the toughness to persevere today."
The Huskies made it 3-0 in the match with senior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) and Rabines posting consecutive wins at No. 5 and 6, respectively. Lazaro took down Van Dieme 6-4 and 6-0 while Rabines put together a three-set win, rebounding from a 7-6 loss in the first set to storm back and win 6-2 and 6-0.
After GSU pulled with 3-2 thanks to wins at No. 3 and 4, the Huskies put away the match at the top stop as Fitz-Randolph clinched it. The senior beat De Winter by scores of 7-6 and 7-5. "Luciana and Jackie led the way today with wins in both singles and doubles. I am proud of the team's effort and fight today; it was a nice to pull out the victory."
The Huskies return back to Connecticut and will next be in action when they host UMass on March 27 at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club.
