STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's track & field team will again head south this weekend as they make the trek to Gainsville, Florida for the 2019 Pepsi Florida Relays. The three-day event kicks-off on Thursday afternoon at the Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.
Fans will be able to follow the Huskies on Friday and Saturday with coverage of the event on SEC Network + and Watch ESPN. Coverage will run from 1 – 5 pm on Friday and 2:30 – 7:45 pm on Saturday.
The Huskies are back in the "sunshine state" after spending their spring break week in at UNF last week. "We really accomplished a lot last week," commented head coach Greg Roy. "It was a different trip this year than last, coming a week later in relation to our season. Last year, it was really about work, work, work and maybe just a quarter of our guys competed. This past week was a little more like getting ready for the season and pretty much everyone who was there, competed in some capacity."
"We were very pleased with the results we got and we feel really good about it," said Roy. "We will have fewer guys there this week and we have a very short week. This will be interesting to see how we react to a big week and now a quick turnaround."
The Huskies will kick things off on Thursday with senior Kyle Brackman (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and r-sophomore Ian Mickool (Ridgefield, Conn.) running the 5,000 meters. Brackman returned to the Huskies lineup after sitting out indoor season and out of the gates, owns the fastest 5,000 meter time in the AAC so far at 14:40.51, winning at last week's UNF Invite.
Sophomore Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.) also returned and grabbed his first win of the season in the high jump last week, matching his career-best jump at 2.12 meters (6'11.5").
Junior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) also made his spring return and ran the 400 meter hurdles in a new personal best time of 53.33 seconds to finish fourth. He also competed in the pole vault, taking fifth with a height of 4.45 meters (14'7.25"), a new personal best height in the event, indoor or outdoors.
"Our guys who came back into the fold did a great job," stated Roy. "Safir was fantastic last week, Kyle Brackman was very good and Jordan Torney was great."
After this weekend's meet in Florida, the Huskies will head south again next weekend for the Spec Towns Invitational at the University of Georgia before coming home to Connecticut to host their own meet on April 12.
