STORRS, Conn. – Former Huskies Casey Umstead and Cecile Pieper are competing in the new Women's FIH Pro League, a field hockey championship for women's national teams.
A 2018 graduate from UConn, Umstead joined the U.S. Women's National Team last year. She was an NFHCA First Team All-American and led the Huskies to the 2017 NCAA Championship.
Pieper spent the 2018 season with the Huskies and has been a member of the German Women's National Team since 2013. She won a bronze medal with Germany at the 2016 Olympics. Pieper was named an NFHCA First Team All-American and led the Huskies to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Nine teams are competing in the FIL Pro League this year: Netherlands, Great Britain, Australia, Argentina, Germany, New Zealand, China, United States and Belgium. Round-robin home and away matches will be played internationally with the top four teams advancing to finals in Amsterdam at the end of June.
The league began in January and runs through June. The competition serves as a qualifier for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The teams played the first half of the season in the Southern Hemisphere before moving to the Northern Hemisphere.
All matches in the FIL Pro League are available to stream through Bleacher Report Live for $2.99 per game or $19.99 for the season.
Currently, Netherlands and Argentina are atop the standings with four wins each.
