STORRS, Conn—The UConn women's track and field team competed at the 2019 ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend and placed second overall as a team, with 56.5 points. In addition to the great success, the Huskies had a pair break school records in senior sprinter Kat Surin and freshman Pole Vaulter Emma Chee.
Surin has been enjoying a tremendous indoor season running her career best times in the 400 Meter Dash. This, her fastest time yet, brought her another gold medal at 52.91 a time that is quicker than the 2018 winner's time of 53.39. Surin has taken first-place in this event through four consecutive meets, including the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Her 2019 progression goes as such; Scarlet & White Invite—53.19, Valentine Invite—53.32, AAC Championships—53.97. Nationally, her time at the Scarlet & White Invite placed her at No. 25 on the NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Qualifying list. As a top-eight finisher at the ECAC/IC4A Championships, she is also an All-ECAC performer. UConn's top time in this event now belongs to Surin and this speedy finish of 52.91, breaking the record she set only a month ago at the Scarlet & White Invite.
Chee posted her best finish yet this indoor season and tabbed a career best with her 3.90m (12-0.50) effort last weekend. This vault was good enough to break the school record of 3.75m (12-3.63) which was set back in 2013 by Lauren O'Connell. Chee has shown great improvement throughout the duration of the indoor campaign with marks of; Nittany Lion Challenge—3.50m (11-5.79), Vanderbilt Invitational—3.69m (12-1.28), Columbia Challenge—3.30m (10-9.92), Scarlet & White Invite—3.65m (11-11.70), Valentine Invite—3.66m (12.00.00), and the AAC Championships—3.84m (12-7.18).
