SAN MARCOS, Texas - The UConn baseball team heads to the Lone Star State for a three-game series with the Bobcats of Texas State University.. UConn enters the weekend at 5-5 overall but have played the No. 2 strongest schedule in the country according to Warren Nolan.Â
History vs. Texas State... This weekend's series against the Bobcats will be the first meetings on the diamond between these two programs.
Big Time-J... Redshirt senior CJ Dandeneau has taken shouldered the load in the UConn bullpen by providing quality innings in crunch time for the Huskies. He leads UConn with six appearances on the season and is 1-0, with one save and a 1:35 ERA. The North Smitfield, R.I. native leads the team with 16 strikeouts and is second with 13.1 innings pitched. The right hander has pitched in every victory for the Huskies this season.
Final Ride... Senior captain John Toppa is enjoying his final season at UConn by getting off to a red-hot start. The Portsmouth, R.I. native has reached base safely in every game this season, leading the Huskies in runs scored (11), home runs (2) and RBIs (10). On top of that, he is hitting .359 with three doubles and six walks.
Filling in For Ace... Senior Jeff Kersten has stepped in the Friday night starters role and pitched like an ACE for the Huskies. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA and has been able to eat up innings on the mound with 18.1 in his three starts.
Developing Arms... The Huskies pitching staff has had a tough start to the season with a 5.90 ERA but the staff is extremely young. Out of pitcher's that have taken the mound this season.,9 of the 13 have less than two years experience in Division I ranks.Â
