UConn hosts annual Northeast Challenge

STORRS, Conn.—The UConn women's track and field team will host their annual home meet on Saturday, April 13th at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The meet with also serve as senior day for Courtney Akerley, Susan Aneno, Laurel Bailey, Kelli Banks, Hannah Fleming, Lindsey Kane, Nicole Kelly, Hannah Parker, Ericka Randazzo, Talia Staiger, Kelsey Swanson, Taylor Bonadies, Kat Surin, Haley Hasty, Nicole Faucette, and Amaris Blount.
There will be 11 teams in total competing at the meet; URI, Albany, Northeastern, South Connecticut State, Central Connecticut State, UMass, American International, Stony Brook, Columbia, MIT, and host UConn.
The day will commence with throwing events at 10:00 a.m., beginning with the men's hammer throw followed by the women's. An hour later, the remaining field events including the jumps and pole vaulting will run concurrently with the steeplechase. All track events are women's events first then men's with the exception of the 10k, which the student-athletes will run together.

THIS MEET, LAST YEAR
UConn edged out UAlbany for the team title with a total of 156 points to their 119. Divine Oladipo took home a pair of gold medals in the shot put and discus. Thalia Ghalam tabbed her first gold medal in the javelin, going a distance of 44.42m. Chanell Botsis and Blount teamed up in the hammer throw to take first and second in the event while capturing 18 points toward the Huskies' efforts. Laurel Bailey competed in the pole vault and took home a silver medal with her 3.60m mark.
UConn was nearly unbeatable on the track, taking six of the 11 events on the day. Susan Aneno competed in the 400 Meter Dash and finished with a personal best. Hannah Parker rounded out the scoring for the Huskies in this event placing sixth overall. Kristina Cherrington came just shy if redoing history in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Brianna O'Brien donned the gold medal as the first-place finisher in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase. UConn swept away the competition in the relay events, 4x100m and 4x400 Meter, taking first in both events.
