UConn has successful opening day at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The UConn women's track and field team opened the 125th Penn Relays in a truly successful fashion. The Huskies garnered three top-5 and five top-10 finishes on the day.
Tia Strackman paced UConn in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:01.14, she finished at tenth position. Kristina Cherrington and Kelli Banks also competed in the event finishing 12th—1:01.26 and 42nd—1:05.05 respectively.
In the 4x400 Meter Relay, the Huskies crossed the finish line in 19th at 3:44.53 in the first heat of the event. The relay team will compete in the College Finals of the 4x400 on Saturday at 2:07p.m.
In the 3000 Meter Run, Rachel Vick was the lone UConn runner vying for position. She concluded the race at 10:00.59, with a top-20 finish. In the 5000 Meter Run, Sarah Leatherwood led the way for the Huskies at 17:06.30. Courtney Akerley and Katelynn Romanchick accompanied her in the race with finishes of 47th—17:38.13 and 54th—17:48.42 respectively. Talia Staiger 18th—10:43.80 and Kelsey Swanson 31st—11:24.34took on other student-athletes in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. Kelly Ward finished fourth overall in the heptathlon with individual marks of; 15.72 in the 100 Meter Hurdles, 1.62m in the High Jump, 9.62m in the Shot Put, 26.51 in the 200 Meter Dash, 5.36m in the Long Jump, 19.67m in the Javelin Throw, and 2:34.34 in the 800 Meter Run.
Off the track, Taylor Woods took charge for the field events with her third place mark of 5.96m (19-6.75) in the Long Jump-Championship. Kennedy Arundel compete in the Long Jump-College and finished 11t overall with a 5.55m (18-2.5) effort. Mikyla Rodger tabbed a top-20 mark of 13.53m (44-4.5) in the Shot Put. In the Hammer Throw, Chanell Botsis garnered a fourth place finish at 60.88m (199-8).
In the final event of the day, Haley Hasty competed in the 10,000 Meter and finished tenth overall with a time of 35:26.26.
