Home run trifecta highlights game one win

GREENVILLE, N.C.—A rain delay of an hour and forty-five minutes did not deter UConn (17-27, 5-11 AAC) in game one of this week's American Athletic Conference series versus ECU (21-27, 3-13 AAC). The Huskies were powered by a trio of home runs from Maura Glatczak, Reese Guevarra, and Kiwi McDaniel. In addition to some pretty tough defense led by Marybeth Olson in the circle.
Glatczak opened up the scoring for UConn in the top of the second, with her first home run of the season whipping over left center. She rounded Alexis Lemus as well to score the game's first pair of runs. Several innings later Guevarra smacked her fourth homer of 2019 to center, brining Ashley Esty along with her. And, last but not least McDaniel's third home run of year was sent dead over left center.
Offensively, the Huskies were on fire and never let up. The overall effort was felt by everyone especially pinch hitter Chloe Kerns who in the top of the third smacked a single to right center to send Glatczak to second, Cutler to third, and McDaniel across home plate. On a wild pitch, Olivia Sappington advanced to second, Briana Marcelino to third, and Guevarra to score on the play.
Olson garnered the win and improved to 11-12 overall. She pitched the entire contest and tossed seven strikeouts and no walks through 25 ECU batters.
The Pirates cracked the scoring seal in the bottom of the fourth on a double to center field and a two RBI home run to center field. ECU had closed the gap leaving the bottom of the fourth to 4-3, UConn. However, the aforementioned Husky offense proved too much to handle while Olson and the defense kept runners off the bases.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th with first-pitch at 2:00 p.m.
