STORRS, Conn.—The UConn (13-19) softball team hosted UMass (15-14) for a lone game on Wednesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field, for a tough midweek non-conference matchup.

The Minutewomen slowed the streaking red-hot Huskies in a 13-3 victory. UMass opened up the game with sacrifice fly to bring a runner home to score. UConn immediately responded, doubling the output of their opponent. Alexis Lemus sent a double skipping to left center that scored Briana Marcelino and Reese Guevarra.

Both teams would go scoreless in the second, after getting a feel for one another in the first. The Minutewomen added a singular run in the top of the third and increased their scoring by one through the next pair of innings.

Down but not out the Huskies adjusted and mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Ashlee Dahman singled to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. A Marcelino single brought home Dahman. UConn had now cut into the 7-3 UMass lead heading into the top of the sixth.

In the remaining two innings, the Minutewomen added six runs to their efforts. The Huskies dived deep into their pitching staff for this contest, behind starter Katie Koshes. She pitched 4.2 innings against 32 UMass batters, striking out six of them. Koshes was relieved by Kylie Gavitt who tossed 1.1 innings with only three walks. Seeing her first action on the mound for the 2019 season was Carli Cutler concluded the final inning in the circle for UConn.

The Huskies will return to American Athletic Conference play on Friday, April 5th in a three-game series versus Memphis. First-pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Burrill Family Field.
