SIMPSONVILLE. Ky. – UConn senior Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) played the back nine of the University of Louisville Golf Club in a sizzling 5-under par 31 Monday, leaving himself one shot off the lead after the first round of the NCAA Golf Championship Louisville Regional.
Hervol's overall 4-under 67 put him in a four-way tie for second place behind tourney leader Matthias Schmid of Louisville (6-under 66) heading into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole event.
Thirteen teams and 10 individual players are in the Louisville Regional, one of six regional sites across the country in the NCAA Golf Championship. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship Finals, set for May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. Auburn, at 8-under, leads the team competition after Round 1.
Hervol, who led UConn in scoring this season with a 71.06 per round scoring average and is the all-time UConn career scoring leader with a four-round average of 72.51 per round, began his round Monday with a bogey 5, but played par golf for the rest of the front nine to go out in 35. He began his back nine with a birdie 3, then put together a stretch of eagle, birdie, birdie on 13, 14 and 15, to reach 4-under.
