Third Varsity 8+ Captures Second-Place Finish at AAC Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The UConn women's rowing team wrapped up the 2019 season by competing in the American Athletic Conference Championships at the Boathouse District on Friday morning – a race highlighted by a second-place finish from the Third Varsity 8+.
"We made a lot of progress on and off the water this season, and I'm sorry to see this year come to an end," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "Our seniors will be greatly missed next year."
For the fifth-consecutive year, UCF took home the AAC championship after totaling 180 points, with SMU (176) and Tulsa (140) rounding out the top three. UConn finished in sixth place with 68 points.
Sanford added, "The course for the Championship was a challenge for us as we tend to compete better with a tail wind. The strong cross head wind extended the race by 30-45 seconds on average, which did not work in our favor overall."
The Third Varsity 8+ finished second in its Grand Final with a time of 8:05.587, defeating SMU and UCF while also capturing UConn's best finish of the day.
Senior Maja Barnouw was selected to the All-AAC First Team while classmate Micaela Nowacki earned All-AAC Second Team honors for their standout performances during the day.
"Congratulations to the Third Varsity 8+ for having our best performance of the day, finishing second place out of four boats, beating SMU and UCF. Also, congratulations to seniors Maja Barnouw and Micaela Nowacki for earning All-Conference awards."
