SOUTH KINGSTON, R.I. – The UConn golf program earned top honors as the 2019 All-New England Division I Golf Awards were announced Friday from a vote by the New England Division I golf coaches.
UConn was honored as the Team of the Year, graduated senior Jimmy Hervol was named Player of the Year, and UConn coach Dave Pezzino was selected as Coach of the Year, in addition to three UConn players – Hervol, rising senior Drake Hull, and graduated senior Nick Harrington -- named to the 10-player All-New England Team.
It is the second time that the Huskies and Pezzino have been honored as New England's top team and Coach of the Year, after winning the same two awards in 2016. Hervol is the first UConn golfer to be named New England Player of the Year.
Pezzino, who just finished his 12th season as UConn's head coach, guided the Huskies to six Top Five finishes in 11 events during the 2018-19 season, including the team title in the UConn Collegiate Invitational, the 11th team championship during his tenure. The Huskies finished lower than seventh place only once this season and tied their best-ever finish of sixth in the American Athletic Conference Championship. In addition, the UConn Golf Team received its 14th consecutive NCAA Public Recognition Award, signifying a team Academic Progress Report score among the top 10 percent nationally in its sport. With this year's trio of honorees, Pezzino has had 14 All-New England picks.
Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) set a UConn single-season per round scoring record (70.89) in 2018-19 and also holds the school career record (72.44). The two-time team captain was UConn's low scorer in six events this season, including a first-place finish in the UConn Collegiate Invitational. This season, he had eight Top 10 and nine Top 20 finishes, 22 rounds of par-or-better and 10 sub-70 rounds.
Hervol was an All-Conference pick for the third straight year and a PING Division I All-Northeast Region pick for the third straight season. He tied for second, one stroke back, in the NCAA Division I Championship Louisville Regional and reached the Purchase, N.Y., Sectional in U.S. Open qualifying.
Hull (Rutland, Vt.) was second (71.9) on the Huskies in per-round scoring this season. He led the team in scoring in two events, including the Rutherford Intercollegiate, where he captured medalist honors with a 5-under 208. Hull had three Top 10 and six Top 20 finishes, 20 rounds of par-or-better and five sub-70 rounds. He was a PING Division I All-Northeast Region pick and named the American Conference Player of the Week on April 17.
Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) ranked third (72.1) on the Huskies in scoring this season, behind only Hervol and Hull. He led UConn in scoring in three consecutive events, on his way to posting three Top 10 and six top 20 finishes. Harrington had 15 rounds of par-or-better and five sub-70 rounds. He was also named a PING Division I All-Northeast Region selection.
