2019 MAAC Rookie Of Year Transfers From Siena
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's golf program has received a signed aid agreement from rising sophomore Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), who will transfer from Siena College and be eligible to join the UConn golfers in the fall of 2019.
Nelson is coming off an outstanding freshman year at Siena College in 2018-19, where he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 2019 Rookie of the Year and was selected to the Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at UConn.
"We are excited to add Jared to the UConn golf family," UConn coach Dave Pezzino said. "He is an extremely hard worker with a high golf IQ and he will fit in immediately to the team culture we have created at UConn. Coach (Max) Major and I are looking forward to working with him."
Nelson had a scoring average of 72.95 per round for 20 rounds in eight events last season, recording five Top 10 finishes and tying for first place in two tournaments, including the UConn Collegiate Invitational at GreatHorse. He had nine rounds of par-or-better and four sub-70 rounds. Nelson was named the MAAC Men's Golfer of the Month for September and he tied for second place at the 2019 MAAC Men's Golf Championship.
Before college, Nelson was a two-time state individual champion in Vermont and led Rutland High School to the Vermont High School Team Championship in 2017. He finished fourth in the 2017 Vermont Amateur Championship, fourth in the 2018 Vermont Amateur, and tied for fifth in the 2019 Vermont Amateur, all of which were won by now-UConn teammate Drake Hull.
Nelson's arrival continues the strong connection between the UConn program and Rutland High School, which now includes Hull, Nelson, incoming freshman Logan Broyles and assistant coach Max Major.
