Sophomore Fires 7-Under 65 In Final Round
HARTFORD HAWKS INVITATIONAL RESULTS
SOUTH KENT, Conn. --- UConn sophomore Jared Nelson (Rutland. Vt.) shot a sizzling 7-under 65, the best individual round of the tournament, on Tuesday during the final round of the Hartford Hawks Invitational, to lead the Huskies to a Top Five finish at Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
Nelson's outstanding finish gave him an aggregate 4-under 75-72-65=212, good enough to propel him 22 places up the leaderboard to tie for ninth place in the 106-player field, his first Top 10 finish since transferring to UConn this year. The 65 is Nelson's career-best round and was his first sub-70 round of the year and his second and third rounds of par-or-better.
As a team, UConn also moved steadily up the leaderboard throughout the tourney, shooting a 3-over 298-282-287=867 to capture fifth place in the 16-team field. UConn's American Conference colleague UCF won the team title with a 24-under 840.
UConn junior Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) nabbed the second Top 20 finish of his career with a 1-under 73-69-73=215, good enough to tie for 18th place. It was the low tourney score of Boulger's college career and included his second career sub-70 round and his 10th round of par-or-better.
Also for UConn, redshirt junior Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.) tied for 31st place with a 4-over 73-76-71=220, senior Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) shot an 11-over 81-68-78=227 to tie for 51st place, and senior Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) tied for 55th with a 13-over 77-73-79=229. Hull's tourney included his 10th career sub-70 round and his 37th round of par-or-better.
Playing as individuals, UConn redshirt freshman Jack Boatwright (Fairfield, Conn.) finished in a tie for 57th with a 14-over 74-78-78=230 in his collegiate debut, while junior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) tied for 75th with a 20-over 82-72-82=236.
UConn will continue the fall portion of its schedule on Sept. 29-Oct. 1, when it hosts its own UConn Invitational at GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass. It is the 11th year for the annual tournament, formerly known as the Connecticut Cup, and will include a 14-team field.
