Huskies Wrap Weekend at Purdue Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The UConn women's tennis team took part in the Purdue Invitational over the weekend. UConn junior Elizabeth Kozyi (Alexandria, Va.) played her way to the finals of her respective draw to lead the Huskies on the weekend.
"This was a great tournament for our team and gave us a chance to compete out of our region against some very strong programs.," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We had some players with injuries, but those that did play, competed very well. Two of our players that really had a strong tournaments were Kozyi and freshmen Denise Lai and Caroline Cook. They really stepped up their games in singles and really led the way this weekend."
In the "Center Draw" Kozyi opened by defeating Lara Slisko of Northern Illinois, 6-0, 6-2. In the semifinal round, Kozyi beat Temilayo Adelakun of DePaul, winning 6-1, 6-1 to advance to Sunday's final. She fell in the final of the draw, losing to Victoria Sec of Ball State, 6-2, 6-2
In the "Pete Draw", freshman Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) lost her opening match to Lenka Antonijevic of DePaul, 6-2, 6-1, but would go on to win the consolation bracket of the draw. Cook beat Grace Whitney of Wright State in a three-set comeback, falling 7-5 in the first but answering with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. She then took down Ashton Yarosh of Wright State, 6-1, 6-0, to close out her tournament.
In the "Hammer Down Draw", freshman Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) won her opening match with Paula Veyhle of Northern Illinois 6-2, 6-2, but came up short in her match with Zeynep Naz Ozturk of Purdue in round 2, losing in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play in the "Gold Draw", a pair of Husky teams got the finals of the consolation bracket after falling in their opening match. The sophomore tandem of Julianne Bou (Baymon, Puerto Rico) and Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) rebounded from an opening loss to beat Potsi and Veyhle of NIU, 8-6, and move into the final with an 8-6 win over Sasaki and Kapitanova of Bowling Green.
They were met there by the team of Cook and Lai who answered their opening round loss with a 8-4 win over Trbeznik and Bandy of Lipscomb. They beat Mayerova and Pommiers of Eastern Michigan, 8-3, to get to the final against their teammates. Bou and Moreau won the tightly contested match-up, posting an 8-6 win.
Sophomore Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) both won a pair of matches playing together over the weekend. The duo beat EMU's Piatek and Ganesan, 8-5, and won over Peric and Dmitrieva of Norther Illinois, 8-1.
The Huskies continue their fall schedule next weekend when they take part in the Army West Point Invitational.
