No. 4 UConn to Open Home Slate vs. No. 19 Rutgers, No. 6 Harvard

STORRS, Conn. – The No. 4 UConn field hockey team (2-0) competes in Storrs for the first time this season as the Huskies host two ranked opponents this weekend. UConn takes on No. 19 Rutgers (2-0) Friday at 6 p.m. and No. 6 Harvard (0-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out
UConn started the season 2-0 with a 4-1 win over No. 15 Northwestern and a 3-2 win over No. 21 Stanford. Against the Wildcats, freshman Marie Auer scored twice in her collegiate debut. The Huskies went down 2-0 vs. the Cardinal before scoring three straight goals to earn their second ranked win.
Tiedtke Earns Weekly Honors
Senior back Antonia Tiedtke earned BIG EAST and NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week honors. She helped limit UConn's first two opponents to 13 total shots and just three total goals. Tiedkte added one goal and two assists in the two games vs. ranked teams.
Scouting the Scarlet Knights
Rutgers began the season 2-0 with wins over No. 24 Maine and Ball State. Austyn Cuneo leads the team with three goals, two assists and eight points. Gianna Glatz has played every minute in goal and holds a 0.58 goals-against average and 83.3 save percentage.
Scouting the Crimson
Harvard begins its season this weekend, taking on Albany on Friday before facing UConn. The Crimson returns 2018 Ivy League Co-Offensive Player of the Year Bente van Vlijmen. Harvard won the Ivy League last season.
In the Rankings
UConn ranks No. 4 in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Preseason Poll. Both of the Huskies' opponents this weekend are ranked as Rutgers checks in at No. 19 and Harvard is No. 6.
Connecticut is opening the season with four straight ranked opponents as the Huskies took on No. 15 Northwester and No. 21 Stanford last week. UConn could extend that streak as its first foe next week, Michigan, is currently ranked No. 7.
Huskies Picked to Win BIG EAST
For the 10th straight season, UConn was picked to win the BIG EAST in the preseason coaches' poll. Senior forward Svea Boker was tabbed the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Boker was joined on the preseason All-BIG EAST tea by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher, sophomore back Lindsay Dickinson, senior back Antonia Tiedtke and junior forward Jessica Dembrowski.
So International
The Huskies currently have eight foreign players on the roster. Four Huskies hail from Germany: freshman Marie Auer, freshman Claire Jandewerth, senior Svea Boker and senior Antonia Tiedtke. Sophomores Maddy Wray and Abby Gooderham and freshman Sophie Hamilton are from England. Junior Chiara Ma is from Australia.
Dembrowski, Dickinson Bring USA Experience to Storrs
Returning starters Jessica Dembrowski and Lindsay Dickinson donned red, white and blue this summer to represent Team USA. Dembrowski was a member of the 2019 U.S. U-21 National Team and traveled to Germany with the squad. Dickinson was a member of the U-19 National Team and also competed in Germany.
2018 Recap
The Huskies went 19-4 last season. UConn won its sixth straight BIG EAST regular season and seventh straight tournament title. Cecile Pieper was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year while Cheyenne Sprecher was the conference's Freshman of the Year. UConn earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
UConn competed in the NCAA Tournament for the 18th straight season. The Huskies advanced to the quarterfinals.
