No. 4 Huskies Blank No. 19 Rutgers in Home Opener

STORRS, Conn. – Two freshmen scored as the No. 4 UConn field hockey team (3-0) posted a 2-0 win over No. 19 Rutgers (2-1) in the Huskies' home opener at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex Friday evening.
Freshmen Marie Auer and Sophie Hamilton scored vs. the Scarlet Knights. Auer currently leads the Huskies with three goals while Hamilton notched the first of her collegiate career Friday.
Auer broke the tie at 3:20 into the second quarter after picking up her own rebound and scoring in front. UConn led 12-3 in shots in the first half.
The Scarlet Knights pushed more offensively in the second half, but junior Kourtney Kennedy and the UConn defense made multiple stops to keep Rutgers off the scoreboard.
With just 44 seconds left in the game, Hamilton took a pass and drove into the circle and shot from the middle of the arc to give UConn a 2-0 lead.
Sprecher finished with six saves, including the 100th of her career. She made four saves in the third quarter. Sprecher notched the seventh shutout of her career and first of the season.
UConn and Rutgers tied in penalty corners, 5-5. The Huskies held a 21-11 advantage in shots.
The Huskies are back at the Sherman Complex Sunday for a game vs. No. 6 Harvard (1-0) at 1 p.m. The match is UConn's fourth straight against a ranked opponent. The Huskies will honor its 15 NCAA Final Four teams.
