STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's track and field team will follow-up their winning performance at the Beantown Challenge last weekend by heading to the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Invitational. Saturday's event will get underway at 11 am at URI's Mackal Field House.
The Huskies will send a limited roster the unscored meet.  "We will not be running a full lineup this weekend, some of the guys that are competing are competing in multiple events, that sort of thing," stated director of cross country and track & field Greg Roy. "Basically we looked at the whole roster and we've got a big meet next week in New York, our first championship of the season at the New England's the week after. We looked at each individual, both men and women, to see what they need to do to be ready to go at the New England's, and New York.
"The New York meet (Columbia Challenge) is very competitive, we won't be able to get all of our people in, so in some cases, this will be a last competition before the New England meet, and for others that will be competing next weekend, it's a tune-up," commented Roy. "And we've got a lot of people that are taking the weekend off from training. Basically, whatever is best for each individual athlete in the context of their season. Goals for this weekend, come out stronger, better, and healthy, that's about it. Compete well, continue to develop and get ready for New York and New England's."
The Huskies got the indoor season started in full swing last weekend competing at Harvard's Beantown Challenge, and event they won for the second-straight year by dominating the nine team event with 216.5 points. Coming off that performance, UConn freshman Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Snyder earned the honors after taking first in the pole vault at the meet with a winning clearance of 5.20 meters (17-0.75) for the Huskies. Snyder's effort currently ranks second overall in the American Conference and ninth nationally so far this season.
The UConn throwers are all scheduled to compete this weekend are coming off big performances last weekend.  Senior Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) got his first win of the season in the weight throw and established a new personal best. Thompson took home gold with a heave of 18.51 meters (60'8.75"), topping his previous best of 17.90 meters set at this meet last year, and currenlty sits fourth in the AAC rankings.  Junior Matthew Brady (Biddeford, Maine) set a new personal best in taking 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 17.59 meters (57'8.50") and is second in the AAC rankings this week.
Following Saturday's meet at URI, the Huskies will head to the famed NYC Armory for next weekend's Columbia Challenge.
