No. 3 UConn to Open Season Saturday

STORRS, Conn. – The No. 3 UConn women's basketball team opens its 2020-21 season Saturday against UMass Lowell (0-1) at 1 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion. The game will be broadcast on SNY and 97-9 ESPN.
Seven newcomers will have their first opportunity to compete for UConn Saturday: redshirt junior Evina Westbrook and freshmen Paige Bueckers, Autumn Chassion, Aaliyah Edwards, Piath Gabriel, Mir McLean and Nika Mühl.
UConn has won 24 consecutive season openers with the team's last loss to open the season coming in 1995-96.
This is the first-ever meeting between UConn and UMass Lowell.
The 2020-21 season is Geno Auriemma's 36th at the helm for the Huskies. The Hall of Fame coach and 11-time national champion holds a 1091-142 (.885) record, which ranks third among NCAA women's basketball coaches.
The Huskies ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP Poll and have remained at the spot for the last two weeks. This was the 14th consecutive season UConn has been ranked in the top five in the preseason AP Poll.
UConn will finally take the court after having its first four games canceled or postponed due to COVID-19. The Huskies haven't played since March 9, a span of 279 days between games.
