PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After back-to-back career-high scoring performances which led UConn to league victories over Tulsa and Cincinnati, freshman guard James Bouknight has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Bouknight (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was 4-of-5 from three-point range and 9-of-14 overall as he poured in 22 points, 19 in the second half, and added five rebounds and two steals on Thursday at Tulsa, sparking the Huskies to their first true road win of the season, 72-56, over the then-first place Golden Hurricane.
On Sunday at Gampel Pavilion, Bouknight followed that performance with another career-high, scoring 23 points, 19 in the second half and overtime, with four rebounds and two steals as the Huskies defeated then-first-place Cincinnati, 72-71. He also hit the two clutch free throws that provided the winning margin.
For the week, the UConn freshman shot .486 ovrerall, .636 from three-point range, and .800 from the foul line.
Bouknight is the first UConn player to earn Player of the Week honors this season, although senior Christian Vital has been named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll five times and junior Josh Carlton was named to the Honor Roll once. Bouknight was previously named the AAC Freshman of the Week on Nov. 25 after an outstanding performance at the Charleston Classic on Nov. 21-24.
UConn's season continues this week with a game at SMU on Wednesday and at home Sunday against Memphis at the XL Center in Hartford.
