ITHACA, N.Y. -- The UConn women's tennis team opened their road trip to western New York on Friday afternoon falling to Cornell, 6-1. The Huskies will head to Binghamton University on Saturday to close the road trip.
"We came up against a tough opponent in Cornell tonight," stated director of tennis Glenn Marshall. "We lost a close doubles point, but Denise and Luciana had a nice win at number 2. In singles, we played tough on every court. Our kids fought, and gave them a battle in every position. The difference today was Cornell played most all of the big points better than us today. We couldn't capitalize on many scoring opportunities, and that really cost us today. I look forward to playing tomorrow against Binghamton, as we want to make improvements in that area."
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) got a hard fought 7-6 (3) win over Sarah Campbell and Michelle Deng. Lai lost a tough three-set battle with Campbell at No. 4 singles, falling 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (9).
