ITHACA, N.Y. - The UConn women's tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Binghamton University to cap their weekend up at Cornell. The Huskies improve to 3-4 in dual matches this season with the win.
"This was a nice win today by the team," stated director of tennis Glenn Marshall. "We came out a little flat in doubles, but were able to sneak out the point. I challenged them going into the singles to pick up the effort and intensity, and they responded with straight set wins in all six singles matches. I am pleased with how they battled through the singles and came through with with the win."
The double point was clinched by the Huskies No. 1 and 2 teams. The sophomore-freshmen tandem of Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) were a 7-5 winner over Regina Furer and Ashley Granieri at No. 2. The Bearcats won at No. 3 leaving the opening point to the winner of the top-seeded match.
UConn sophomore Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) and Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) topped the tandem of Michelle Eisenberg and Samara Eisenberg, 7-6 (1).
The Huskies took care of buisness in singles action, sweeping all six matches to complete the shutout win. Moreau led the way at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Eisenberg. Bou was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Furer at No. 2 and Rabines beat Ashley Granieri at No. 3, 6-4 and 6-3.
Lai won her match with Jamie Lau at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-4 followed by classmates Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) winning her match with Lara Kaplan, 6-4, 7-5, and Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) closing the sweep with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Julia Gumieniak.
The Huskies are next in action next weekend when they head to Houston, Texas to face UT-Arlington and the Cougars in a pair of matches.
