Evans and Firstov Garner Hockey East Honors

STORRS, Conn. - UConn sophomore Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) was chosen as the Hockey East Player of the Week and freshman Vladislav Firstov (Yaroslavl, Russia) took home the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week honor after helping lead the Huskies to a two-game Hockey East sweep over New Hampshire over the weekend.
Evans had a six-point weekend to help lead a UConn offensive attack that piled up 14 goals over the two-games with the Wildcats. On Friday night, Evans totaled a career-high five points, recording his second hat-trick on the season and also chipping in two assists. With the game tied up at 3-3 in the second, Evans scored to give the Huskies a lead for good and then added two in the third period to cement away a 7-4 win on the road. Evans became the first player in the NCAA this season to record two hat-tricks. In Saturday's 7-4 win, Evans grabbed an assist, setting up classmate Ruslan Iskhakov (Moscow, Russia) for the game's first goal. On the season, Evans is fourth on the team in scoring with eight goals and nine assists.
Firstov takes home his third Hockey East rookie award on the season after putting up two goals and five assists in UConn's matching 7-4 wins over the Wildcats. Firstov finished with a season-best four points in Friday night's road win, scoring what proved to be the game-winner and picking up three-assists. He came back on Saturday and scored a goal and added an assist at home. He leads the team with six multi-point games this season and also is the team's leading scorer with 22 points and 11 goals.
The duo and the rest of the Huskies will have the week off while the prepare to head up to the University of Maine for a two-game league set on February 14 and 15.
