FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UConn softball team earned a split on Opening Day of the 2020 season. The Huskies grabbed a 3-0 shutout win over Georgetown in their first outing of the day before falling, 2-1, to LIU in a hard-fought, extra inning game.

The Huskies return to the field tomorrow for a pair of games against Delaware and Boston College. UConn will face the Blue Hens at 9:00 am before squaring off with the Eagles at 11:15.

Game 1

UConn opened up Day 1 of the FGCU Kickoff Classic in dominating fashion with a shutout of Georgetown.

The teams went three up and three down through several innings before UConn broke it open in the bottom of the fourth. Following Briana Marcelino's single up the middle, Olivia Sappington took the plate and knocked a single into right field allowing Marcelino to come around and score the Huskies first run of the season.

The Huskies added to their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Marcelino doubled to right center, scoring Morgan Ash and Reese Guevarra to put UConn up 3-0.

Junior Marybeth Olson dominated the circle with six shutout innings of work. She was perfect through three and had a no-hitter through five, while only allowing three hits and tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts. Katie Koshes came in to grab her first save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2

The Huskies pushed LIU to the limit in game two.

Freshman Megan O'Neil made her first-career start, earning seven strikeouts in three and a third innings of work. Guevarra, Olson and Kiwi McDaniel each registered two hits.

Both teams played lockdown defense through several innings as neither team gave up a hit until LIU's eventual score in the fourth. The Huskies showed their resiliency and came from behind to tie the game at the top of the seventh. With the Huskies down to their final out, McDaniel singled to center field, scoring Aziah James from second to send the game into extra innings.
