NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. - The UConn women's tennis team is on the road in New Jersey this weekend and as they took the court on Friday against Seton Hall were still a few players short of their normal lineup due to injuries. The Huskies battled and gutted their way to their second-straight win, beating the Pirates 4-3 on Friday night.
"Today was an exciting match, and a great victory for our program," stated director of tennis Glenn Marshall. "For the second straight contest, we grabbed a 4-3 win with Selen Takunyaci winning the deciding match in both matches. We won the doubles point, and that proved to be the difference. Cassie was struggling with a shoulder injury, but was able to rise up for a win at number one doubles with Mireille. We sealed the doubles point with an exciting win at number two doubles."
"In singles, we had to default our number six singles spot because of injuries," commented Marshall. "But that didn't stop our kids from fighting hard, with close singles victories by Moreau, Lai, and Takunyaci to lead us to the win. I'm very proud of the team for digging deep and finding a way to battle through adversity today."
On the doubles court, the No. 1 team of senior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) opened with a 6-3 win over Hermehr Kaur and Aina Plana Ventosa. The Huskies clinched the opening point at the No. 2 spot where sophomore Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) won over Minja Gligic and Hiba El Khalfi, 6-4.
In singles play, Moreau gave UConn a 2-1 lead in the match with a win at No. 1, beating Kaur, 6-1 and 7-6 (1), her team-leading ninth singles win on the season. Lai gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead with a win at No. 3, beating Michal Matson, 7-6 (3) and 6-1. The Pirates tied it up at 3-3, leaving it to the No. 5 singles match to clinch it and freshman Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) got the job done, beating El Khalfi, 6-4 and 7-5.
The Huskies wrap up their road trip on Saturday when they take on NJIT.
