STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Lia LaPrise tallied five goals to lead the Huskies to victory over Columbia on Wednesday afternoon at the Sherman Family Complex. UConn improves to 5-2 on the season, while the Lions fall to 0-7.
"I thought our defense did some good things and had some good defensive stands. Alyssa did really well causing turnovers and getting ground balls for us as well," said head coach Katie Woods.
"Landyn did a good job in the cage today. I thought Abby was real good in the midfield. She was our main transition player through the midfield today. It was nice to see the goals today and it's really nice to see Sam put some shots away, she's a great shooter. I think we have to continue to work through some more offensive stuff moving forward, but we are happy with the win."
LaPrise's five goals led all scorers Wednesday afternoon. The sophomore would add an assist for six points on the day, totaling a team-high 40 points on the season. Junior Sydney Watson added three goals of her own, giving her a team-high 27 goals on the year. She also recorded six draw controls. Fellow juniors Stephanie Palmucci and Abby Vetsch were key parts of the offense, tallying four assists and a goal and an assist, respectively.
Junior Sam McKenna and sophomores Casey O'Grady and Grace Coon also got on the scoresheet against the Lions. McKenna grabbed a pair of second half goals while the pair of sophomores each added a goal. Senior Olivia Miles also scored for the Huskies, giving her 15 goals on the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Landyn White got the start and the win on Wednesday afternoon. White picks up her first start of the season and made seven saves in the victory. Senior Alyssa Conklin was a force on the defensive end as well, picking up four ground balls and recording two caused turnovers.
