STORRS, Conn. – The third-ranked UConn women's basketball team (6-0, 5-0 BIG EAST) competes for the first time in 2021 on Saturday as the Huskies host Providence (5-6, 3-3) in Gampel Pavilion at 1 p.m. The game will air on SNY and 97-9 ESPN.
UConn last played on Dec. 29, when the Huskies picked up a 75-52 win over No. 18 DePaul. Freshman Paige Bueckers led the Huskies with 18 points. Four other players finished in double-digit scoring: Olivia Nelson-Ododa (16), Christyn Williams (14), Aaliyah Edwards (11) and Evina Westbrook (10). Nelson-Ododa also grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. The Huskies held the Blue Demons, who came into the game averaging 88.3 points, to 52 points.
For their efforts against DePaul, Nelson-Ododa was named BIG EAST Player of the Week while Bueckers was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.
Providence beat Butler, 62-50, on Thursday. This season, Mary Baskerville, an Enfield, Conn., native, leads the Friars with 14.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Head coach Jim Crowley is in his fifth season at Providence.
The Huskies are 40-21 all-time vs. Providence, including 39-10 under Geno Auriemma. UConn and Providence are meeting for the first time since Feb. 12, 2013, when the Huskies were in their first stint as members of the BIG EAST.
Auriemma leads the nation with an 88.5 win percentage and is third in wins for Division I women's basketball coaches with 1,097 wins. Tara VanDerveer (Idaho/Ohio State/Stanford, 1,104) and Pat Summitt (Tennessee, 1,098) are ahead of Auriemma.
