STORRS, Conn. - Maintaining its momentum at home, the UConn women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 comeback victory over Providence Thursday night at Gampel Pavilion.
With the win, UConn (13-6, 5-2 BIG EAST) improved to 8-1 in home matches. Furthermore, the Huskies are off to their first 8-1 start at home since the 1999 campaign.
A trio of Huskies ripped a dozen kills in senior Caylee Parker, senior Kennadie Jake-Turner and junior Jasmine Davis. Parker additionally recorded her second straight double-double with 13 digs, while junior Madi Whitmire dealt 39 assists, and junior Karly Berkland added a game-high 24 digs.
Providence (13-7 overall, 1-6 BIG EAST) started the match with a 4-0 run and struck a .375 attacking percentage as it took the opening set.
With the second set tied at 8-all, UConn turned the momentum around with an 8-0 streak as it doubled up the Friars. The Huskies took advantage of nine Providence errors, while Jake-Turner highlighted the frame with three kills and five block assists.
"Regardless of score, we didn't really change our identity of who we are as a group," said head coach Ellen Herman-Kimball. "Especially after the first set, being down and not having as much energy, but then in the middle of second set you started to see us blossom more and that was great to see."
Jake-Turner stayed hot in the following stanza as her third service ace pulled the Huskies ahead, 13-11. The tempo resumed a back-and-forth pace, and the 14th tie put the scoreboard at 21-21 until kills from Parker and junior Allie Garland gave UConn the lead for good.
The Friars eked out a 9-6 edge in the fourth set, but three straight attacking errors followed by a service ace from Parker gave UConn its first lead, 10-9. Once again, the two squads went toe-to-toe down the stretch as the score stood at 21-all. Sophomore Taylor Pannell sparked 4-0 run to close out the match remained undefeated in BIG EAST home contests.
"It's great to be home, you get can in your routine, and there's a level of comfort being here." remarked Herman-Kimball. "After being on the road for two weeks, it's really nice to be back in Gampel."
UConn will remain at home as it hosts Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
