INDIANAPOLIS – Playing at Hinkle Fieldhouse for the first time, the UConn women's volleyball team secured its 10th sweep of the season in downing Butler 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
Senior Kennadie Jake-Turner was lights-out from the outside, leading UConn (17-7, 9-3 BIG EAST) by matching a career high with 16 kills on a .520 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Caylee Parker also had a day on the attack, recording 14 kills, while graduate student McKayla Wuensch served a season-high 47 assists.
Butler (13-12, 7-5 BIG EAST) took advantage of errors to eke out a 7-5 lead to start, but junior Jasmine Davis slashed two straight kills, and junior Allie Garland added in a pair of her own to tie it at 9-all. The Huskies found their groove midway through the set as Jake-Turner kicked off an 8-1 run to give UConn an 18-14 grip as is sealed the first point with a 25-19 victory.
The following stanza started slow as 13 of the first 17 points were decided via error, though the Huskies took a one-point edge, 9-8. The Bulldogs went on the attack to turn the scoreboard its way, 22-20. Once again, the Huskies worked a comeback as two kills from Jake-Turner started a 4-1 streak to give UConn set point. From there, the second set became a marathon as seven advantages were on the line before Jake-Turner gave UConn the frame, 32-30, after back-to-back kills.
With the score knotted at 10-10 in the third set, Parker sparked a 5-0 streak as the Huskies looked to put the match away. The Bulldogs clawed their way back, though UConn still held a 21-19 advantage late in the frame. Parker and Davis swung kills from the outside before Wuench went for a touch kill to force match point, and Garland ended the contest to give UConn the victory.
The Huskies will return home next weekend for matches versus Georgetown (Nov. 5) and Villanova (Nov. 6).
