HARTFORD, Conn. – Boston College senior Jack McBain scored the game-winner with 1:22 left in the third period as the UConn Huskies dropped a 2-1 Hockey East match-up to the No. 16 nationally ranked Eagles Friday night from the XL Center in Hartford.
The loss snapped UConn's four-game winning streak and dropped the Huskies to 6-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in Hockey East. BC improved to 6-4-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, UConn grabbed the lead in the second as sophomore Ryan Tverberg (Richmond Hill, Ontario) scored the Huskies lone goal, his eight on the season to extend his streak to four-straight games with a goal.
BC's Colby Ambrosio tied it up for the Eagles with just 20 seconds left in the second, his fourth of the season, sending the game to the final period knotted back up. With the UConn goaltender Darion Hanson (East Bethel, Minn.) stopping two break-away chances for BC in the third the game looked like it might head to overtime.
McBaine had other ideas and took a feed from Nikita Nesterenko on a two-on-two rush into the zone and snapped a shot past Hanson for the go-ahead tally.
Hanson finished with 37 saves in the loss while BC goaltender Eric Dop made 29 saves. There was just matching minors called on both teams in the third period as the only penalties for the night leaving both teams without a power play chance.
1st period:
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period and were dead even on shots, 11-11.
2nd period:
The Huskies got the game's first goal at 8:13 as Tverberg continued to find the back of the net, scoring his eighth of the year. Grad student Jarrod Gourley (Calgary, Alberta) fed Tverberg up the right wing through the neutral zone. The sophomore used his speed to beat the defense for a wrap-around chance, beating Dop to the far post for a 1-0 lead.
BC was able to tie it up late in the period, scoring with just 20 seconds left. The Eagles held the puck in deep and defensemen Marshall Warren worked behind the net, curling around the right post then finding Ambrosio alone in the left circle for a one-timer to tie the game up at 1-1.

3rd period:
The Eagles kept the game out of overtime with McBaine scoring his sixth of the year with 1:22 to go. Picking up a drop pass from Nesterenko into the UConn zone, McBain buried one past Hanson that looked like it also deflected off a UConn defender for a 2-1 lead.
The Huskies pulled Hanson down the stretch and kept the pressure on Dop looking for the tying goal but the goaltender stood tall in the waning seconds to preserve the win.
