LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell goaltender Owen Savory stopped all 34 shots he faced to send the UConn Huskies home with a 3-0 Hockey East loss Saturday afternoon from the Tsongas Center.
UConn drops their third-straight and see their record come even at 6-6-0 and 4-4-0 in Hockey East. The No. 15 nationally ranked River Hawks remained unbeaten in the league at 5-0-0 and improve to 7-1-2 on the year.
The Huskies were shut out for the second time this season, outshooting UMass Lowell 34-24 on the day. After two scoreless periods, UML's Andre Lee scored twice in the third and the River Hawks tacked on an empty net goal late to close out the scoring.
UConn finished 0-for-3 on the power play while UMass Lowell was 0-for-4. Graduate student Darion Hanson (East Bethel, Minn.) made 21 saves in the loss.
1st period:
A defensive minded first period of hockey finished scoreless with shots even at 6-6. The Huskies looked as if they got the game's first goal at 16:26 as Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) knocked in a rebound but after a review the goal was disallowed due to a high stick.
2nd period:
The Huskies doubled up their shots in the second period with a 13-9 advantage but saw both power play chances come up empty. The Huskies got their third extra skater chance late in the period but saw it wiped out by an interference call with 8.1 seconds left, setting up 4-on-4 hockey to start the third.
3rd period:
UMass Lowell broke the scoring drought at 4:34 of the third, capitalizing on a UConn turnover in their zone. Carl Berglund picked-up the puck inside the blue line and fired on net with Lee in front to get a redirect for a 1-0 lead.
Lee struck again at the 16:17 mark to give his team a 2-0 lead. Picking up a feed from Brian Chambers from the neutral zone, Lee carried the puck across the slot area to his left and fired a shot back to the right with a defenseman on him, beating Hanson to the right corner for his seventh of the year.
The River Hawks added an empty net goal at 18:25 as Reid Stefanson fired one in from just across his own blue line to make it 3-0.
Up Next:
The Huskies and River Hawks will close out their weekend series on Sunday at the XL Center on the CW20 in Connecticut.
