STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team welcomed a sellout crowd (10,167) back to Gampel Pavilion Tuesday night with a dominating performance in a 99-48 season-opening victory over Central Connecticut.
The Huskies used a balanced attack that saw five players score in double figures and three more with eight or nine points as they posted their largest margin of victory since a 103-47 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Adama Sanogo led the UConn scoring parade with a career-high 20 points and added 5 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Grad student R.J. Cole had 15 points and 3 assists, senior Tyrese Martin added 14 points, 2 assists and 2 steals, while grad student Tyler Polley had 11 points and junior Jalen Gaffney chipped in with 10.
As a team, the Huskies shot a whopping 61.3 percent overall and 61.5 percent from 3-point range. In addition they hit 15 of 19 from the foul line.
On the defensive end, UConn held Central to 35.3 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Joe Ostrowsky led the Blue Devils with 12 points.
UConn wasted no time taking control of the game, jumping out to a 22-5 lead and never looking back. By halftime, the Huskies had widened the gap to 52-23. The second half was more of the same as UConn kept its foot on the gas and built the margins to 62-25, 70-32, and 86-41 before the final 51-point victory. In all, 10 Huskies hit the scoring column.
UConn will continue its season on Saturday, playing host to Coppin State at the XL Center in Hartford, with tipoff scheduled for noon.
