STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team was tripped up in its Big East opener, falling to the Providence Friars, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies drop to 1-1 on the season, while Providence improves to 2-0.
UConn registered seven shots on the afternoon, with the two best scoring chances coming from Felix Metzler and Ben Awashie. Senior goalkeeper Jahmali Waite collected five saves in the loss.
Providence opened up the game scoring in the 13th minute. Paulo Lima converted on a penalty kick and the visitors took a 1-0 lead at 12:25.
The Huskies nearly found an equalizer in the 34th. Metzler was awarded a free kick following a Providence foul, but the junior's line-drive shot was scooped up by the Friar goalkeeper. The visitors threatened to extend the lead late in the half, but Waite thwarted back-to-back Providence shot attempts to keep it a one-score game.
UConn had another opportunity to even the score early in the second frame. Awashie received the ball and dribbled it up the left side of the field, but his angled shot attempt at 48:39 was denied.
The Friars added another goal at 60:56 off the foot of Gevork Diarbian to increase their lead to 2-0, the game's final margin.
