UConn Golfers Win Yestingsmeier Match Play Event

DADE CITY, Fla. --- The UConn golf team defeated Evansville, 5-1, in match play competition Tuesday to complete a perfect 3-0 sweep and finish in first place at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play Tournament, held at the Lake Jovita South Course in Dade City, Fla. The six-team event was sponsored by Ball State University.
UConn was the only team to earn three points in the competition, defeating Drake, 4.5-1.5, and Loyola-Chicago, 4-2, during the first day of competition on Monday and Evansville on Tuesday.
Drake (2 points) and Ball State (2 points) finished tied for second, DePaul (1.5 points) was fourth, Loyola Chicago (0.5 points) was fifth, and Evansville (0 points) finished sixth.
Three Huskies went undefeated (3-0) in the tournament – freshmen Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.) and Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) an senior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R). Manuel was especially dominant, winning his opening match 7&6 and his second 5&4, before finishing with a 1-up triumph.
Also for UConn, senior Finn Boynton (Milford, Conn.) posted a 2-0-1 record, while junior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) and freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) each finished at 1-2.
UConn, with a first and a second-place finish in its two match play events that opened the 2021 spring season, moves into conventional tournament competition in its next event. The Huskies will travel to the Sea Palms Resort at St. Simon Island, Ga., to play in the Sea Palms Invite, sponsored by Western Carolina University.
