Eveillard Leads Huskies over SJU

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's soccer team (3-1-1, 1-1-1 BE) picked up its first Big East win of the season, defeating St. John's (5-1, 2-1 BE) 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.
How it Happened
The first half saw UConn maintain possession early on and grab the go-ahead goal. Sophomore Jessica Mazo whipped a cross into the box from the right side of the field where senior Yamilee Eveillard's close range header bounced off the far post and in to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. UConn also defended well in the first half, allowing just a single shot on goal. Randi Palacios with one first half save.
St. John's had an opportunity to equalize in the 61st minute with a header from Jessica Garziano, but redshirt senior goalkeeper Randi Palacios was in position to make the stop. Freshman Jaydah Bedoya's shot in the 65th minute grazed the top of the crossbar before going out of play, UConn's best attempt on goal in the second half. Palacios made another huge save for the Huskies in 72nd minute, making a point-blank stop to maintain the clean sheet.
UConn would hold on to the lead and take a 1-0 win for its first Big East Conference win of the season. The Huskies outshot the Red Storm 14-10 in the game and had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Huskies will host Seton Hall on Sunday, March 14th at Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00pm.
