Huskies Fall to Providence in Hockey East Quarterfinals

STORRS, Conn. – Providence got goals from six different players as the Friars dealt the UConn Huskies a 6-1 loss in the Hockey East Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon from the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
The Huskies are eliminated from the playoffs and fall to 10-11-2 on the season while Providence moves on to Wednesday's semifinals and moves to 11-8-5 overall.
The Friars never trailed on Sunday and opened up a 3-0 lead early in the second period. UConn junior Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) scored his fourth goal of the season to cut into the Providence lead at 9:20 of the second period, pulling the Huskies to within 3-1.
Providence scored early in the third and killed off three UConn power play chances in the period before tacking on two more to advance with a 6-1 win. PC freshman Uula Ruikka scored a goal and had an assist as did classmates Nick Poisson and Brett Berard. Junior Tyce Thompson finished with a goal and an assist as well.
Sophomore goaltender Jaxson Stauber made 40 saves to earn the win. UConn junior netminder Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) stopped 37.
1st period:
Providence took a 1-0 lead at 8:47 as Ruikka blasted a shot from the high right circle and Parker Ford was able to get a tip in front and past Vomacka for his sixth of the season.
2nd period:
The Friars struck twice in the first three minutes of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Coming on an offensive zone face-off, Cam McDonald shuttled the puck along the blue line to Ruikka who blasted a one-timer through traffic and off the post and in for his fourth on the year and a 2-0 leads just 1:58 in.
Providence went up 3-0 just a minute later as Poisson was able to get to the front of the net and grab a rebound right off the pads of Vomacka and tuck it home for his fifth this year.
The Huskies got on the board at 9:20 as Kondelik scored his fourth of the season. The Huskies kept possession in the zone and Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) circled to the high slot and rifled one on net. Stauber made the save but Kondelik was camped at the right post and was able to chip a rebound just over the goaltender to pull UConn within 3-1.

3rd period:
Providence struck early in the third to take back a three-goal lead. Poisson created a turnover behind the Husky net and centered a feed to Thompson, who was stopped on the intital shot. Thompson stayed with the play and found a way to poke it off Vomacka and in for his 11th and a 4-1 lead.
Berard made it 5-1 at the 10:53 mark, taking advantage on the rush into the zone. The Friars created a turnover in the netural zone and Berard was able to clean up a rebound in front off a Chase Yoder shot for his fourth. PC's Max Crozier finished out the scoring at 15:20, finding a rebound in front off a Berard shot.
