STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team lost a hard fought battle with the Boston University Terriers on Saturday afternoon, 4-3, at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy. The Huskies saw their four-game winning streak snapped as they fall to 4-2 on the year.
"The team had a long battle with BU today, and came up just a bit short," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "It was a great match, and our team showed a lot of heart and fight. We came out in doubles with energy and enthusiasm on all of the courts, securing the doubles point. The team has been getting better in doubles over the last several matches, and it definitely helped having that confidence today."
The Huskies continued their trend of strong double play, opening with three wins to secure the doubles point. At No. 2 the sophomore tandem of Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) posted a 6-2 win over Emily Kim and Victoria Carlsten to start things off. At No. 3, sophomore Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) teamed for a 6-2 win and the top spot of junior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) made it a clean sweep with a 7-6 (4) win.
"In singles, we were led by our captain Julieanne Bou, who had one of her best matches of the spring season," said Marshall. "She beat a hard hitting BU player, by using her variety, patience and mental toughness. The other singles win came from Caroline Cook, who has been playing at a high level for this entire spring season. The match came down to Selen at 5 singles, who lost in a very close three set battle 6-4 in the third set. She has been playing excellent tennis the past few weeks, and this was just one of those matches that came down to just a few points."
BU came storming back in singles, earning wins at No. 3, 6, and 2 to take a 3-1 lead in the match. The Huskies came right back as Bou got a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Carlsten and Cook followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kim at No. 4 and pulled the match even at 3-3. It was Bou's fourth-straight singles win, all at No. 1.
The match was decided at No. 5 where Takunyaci lost a tough three-set battle with Katya Martens. She won the opening set 6-3 but fell 6-4 and 6-4. "I'm extremely proud of the team's effort and fight today. We never backed down, and learned a lot about our toughness today that will help us down the road."
The Huskies will take to the road next weekend for a pair of matches, heading to Stony Brook on March 27 and then playing their first BIG EAST opponent at St. John's on March 28.
