STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Huskies will kick-off the 2021 outdoor track & field season this Friday with the first of three home meets this spring in the UConn Spring Invite at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on campus.
The Huskies will welcome athletes from Army West Point, Northeastern and Southern Connecticut State University to Storrs for the first scored meet of the outdoor season. Field events will get underway at 10 am with track events set to step off at 10:45 am.
Live results will be available throughout the day HERE and friends and family will be able to watch a live stream on the team's Facebook Page. Due to COVID-19 protocols, there will be no outside spectators allowed at this event.
"This will be the most home meets we have ever had during the regular season," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "This is a scoring meet and in the 25 years of meets at Sherman, we have lost just once and tied one. Army was the team to tie us back in the second year of the complex. They will be here and rearing to go. This is going to be a great opportunity to find out where we are and who we are. Who's ready to get going and to compete!"
The Huskies also named their 2021 team captains for the outdoor season in seniors Omar Gebril (North Haven, Conn.), Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) and Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.).
"All great choices," commented Roy. "The track accomplishments of Jordan, Eric and Cam can speak for themselves and they can all lead by example. Omar has been the real "glue guy" for us in helping our guys navigate the challenges of the last 12 months. He is very positive and is really respected. And they all respect what he represents."
After an abbreviated indoor season, the Huskies will get their first chance to compete up and down their roster for the first time in nearly a year. Friday's meet will also give UConn their first chance to measure up against other teams in a scored meet.
"On the track, the 400 meters and 400 hurdles look like they will be great races, the 1500 too," said Roy. "Every event on the track, our guys will be challenged strongly. In the field events, Army will be really strong. So this is going to be a great chance to see who we are and where we are at this point in the spring."
The Huskies will host two more meets during the spring including the UConn Dog Fight on April 9 and the UConn Northeast Invitational on April 23.
