STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Huskies will kick-off the 2021 outdoor track & field season this Friday with the first of three home meets this spring in the UConn Spring Invite at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on campus.
The Huskies will welcome athletes from Army West Point, Northeastern and Quinnipiac to Storrs for the first scored meet of the outdoor season. Field events will get underway at 10 am with track events set to step off at 10:45 am.
Live results will be available throughout the day HERE and friends and family will be able to watch a live stream on the team's Facebook Page. Due to COVID-19 protocols, there will be no outside spectators allowed at this event.
"This will be the most home meets we have ever had during the regular season," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "This is a scoring meet and in the 25 years of meets at Sherman, we have lost just once and tied one. Army was the team to tie us back in the second year of the complex. They will be here and rearing to go. This is going to be a great opportunity to find out where we are and who we are. Who's ready to get going and to compete!"
UConn announced their team captains for the 2021 outdoor season as well in seniors Chanell Botsis (Coquitlam, British Columbia), Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.), Kelly Ward (Oxford, Conn.) and Taylor Ward (Marlboro, Md.) and junior Shanelle Colmon (East Brunswick, N.J.).
"As we get the season started, we are looking to see what we are and who we can be," stated Roy. "We need to find our identity. You can see that in the election of captains. Leadership is critical, especially in a younger program, and I think this is a statement from the team on who they think their leaders are, and that says a ton."
The Huskies will be able to compete as a full team for the first time since last year's indoor season. "We are looking at this as hitting the reset button for the program," stated Roy. "We made real progress last year in the indoor season and we felt good about where we were headed, but the pandemic hit and we got kind of stuck and have been waiting to get back at it. So we really feel like we are ready to reset and get this program headed back on that track."
An abbreviated indoor season did see Woods just miss out on a spot in the NCAA Championship in the long jump. Woods finished the year ranked 16th, tied for that spot with Lishanna Ilves from Nebraska both at 6.33 meters (20'9.25"). She missed qualifying by way of a second-best jump from Ilves being better.
The Huskies will host two more meets during the spring including the UConn Dog Fight on April 9 and the UConn Northeast Invitational on April 23.
