STORRS, Conn. – UConn senior midfielder Sydney Watson (Prince Fredrick, Md.) scored four goals and won 11 draw controls to lead the Huskies to a 14-11 win over the University at Albany at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at Rizza Performance Center.
The Huskies broke open a tied game at the half and put the clamps on defensively to hold off the Great Danes late en route to their third-straight win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
UConn won the battle in the draw circle, especially early in the first half, finishing the game with a 15-12 edge. After falling behind 2-1 just 3:32 into the game, the Huskies ran off four-straight and five of the next six goals to open up a 6-3 lead at the 15:6 mark. Watson scored three of the Huskies' first five goals of the game.
UAlbany closed the half with three-straight with Katie Pascale scoring two of her three goals on the run and sending the game into the break tied 6-6. UConn's Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) scored her second goal to open the second half but two-straight from UAlbany's Madison Conway and Kyla Zapolski to give the Great Danes their only lead of the day at 8-7 with 21:51 left to play.
The Huskies responded by scoring three-straight and six of the next seven to lead 13-9 at the 6:50 mark. Shaffer got her third of the game while junior Lia LaPrise (Windsor, Conn.) tallied a pair of unassisted goals. Goals from Kathryn Sancilio and Kendra Harbinger cut the UConn lead to two with 4:45 left, but solid defense down the stretch and Watson's fourth goal with 1:54 left sealed the win for UConn.
LaPrise finished with five points adding three assists to her two-goal effort. Seniors Abby Vetsch (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Stephanie Palmucci (Herndon, Va.) each had two goals apiece. Sophomore Landyn White (X) made six saves to record her third win on the year.
