MANCHESTER, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team picked-up their first win of the 2021 season by edging out Fordham, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy. The Huskies even their record at 1-1 on the season.
"What an exciting win today over Fordham," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "It was a great match all around, and we were so excited to be back on our home courts. The team came out focused in doubles from the start, and we were able to get the doubles point with wins at #1 and 2. In singles, we were led to victory by Denise Lai, Doga Selen Takunyaci, and Caroline Cook, who sealed the win at number 4. I was very pleased with the total team effort and win today."
UConn opened up by taking the key doubles point with it coming down to the No. 2 spot. UConn's junior-freshman combo of Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) opened with a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spots. Fordham answered at No. 3 but UConn sophomores Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) clinched it with a hard fought 7-6 (7) win over Arine Taluyenko and Genevieve Quenville.
In singles play, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the match with an opening win from Lai at No. 3 over Eleni Fasoula, 6-1 and 6-0. The Rams pulled the match even by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 but the Huskies would close out the win at the No 4 and 5 spots.
