Huskies Compete in Double Duel at Overpeck Regatta

OVERPECK PARK – UConn women's rowing continued its 2021 slate as the team competed in the Overpeck Regatta alongside Saint Joseph's, George Washington, Rhode Island, Manhattan, and Massachusetts. The Huskies had four boats competing in the event – each one racing twice.
The Varsity Four, competing in the B level final, secured first-place (4th place overall) with a time of 8:09.1 and finished ahead of SJU (8:18.0) and Manhattan (9:00.1). UConn's Varsity Eight (7:03:3) and Second Varsity Eight (7:14.1) finished second in their respective B level finals, which gave each crew a 5th place standing overall. The Second Varsity Four's time of 9:33.0 earned them third.
"It was great to be able to jump into this race last minute after COVID cancelled our scrimmage with Trinity," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "Getting the opportunity to race twice against these great schools was a fantastic learning experience for us today. We have had limited water time and look forward to the upcoming week of being able to practice more due to our spring break."
The Huskies garnered four third-place finishes in the morning session, with the Varsity Eight posting the team's best mark of the a.m. at 7:05.7. UConn's Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, and Second Varsity Four boats finished with times of 7:13.7, 8:15.0, and 9:24.7, respectively.
"The goal is to take the positives and the negatives from today, make changes and apply what we learned today to practice, and get faster every day."
UConn is back in action next weekend as the Huskies head up the road to Cambridge, Mass., to compete in a regatta hosted by Boston University. The Huskies and Terriers will be joined on the Charles River by UMass and Northeastern.
